CRICKET: Devnik United grabs 2nd victory in GCA Division 1 League Qualifier B as Hurricanes shy Swami Indians

After their week 1 win against Champions United, Devnik United Cricket Club is on a mission to make it to the best 8 clubs in the Ghana Cricket Association League, as they saw off GT CC on week 2 of the Qualifier B T20 on Oval A on Sunday, December 8, 2024.

Devnik’s Aqeel Israr Syed, with 4.0-2-4-3 in the bowling figures, inspired their 10-run victory over Champions United after a 112/7 and 102/9 result on Sunday, December 1.

This Sunday, they swept GT CC all out for 136 in 18.3 overs to score 137/4 in 19 overs, winning by 6 wickets with 6 balls remaining. Captain of Devnik, Rohit Makhija, who took 3.5-0-22-2 in their first victory and was adjudged the player of the match, this time took 3.0-0-21-3 and scored 29 (26).

Teammate and player of the match against Champions United, Aqeel Israr recorded another impressive bowling figure, 3.3-0-22-2, contributing to the team’s success.

Meanwhile, earlier Hurricanes were too much for Swami Indians Cricket Club, who nearly took a plane back home to safety. Swami had their necks pressed as they managed 70-10 in 13.3 overs in a match that saw the eventual player of the match, Viprendra Partap, take 4.0-0-18-6.

Partap began his exploits with a clean bowled on Manoj JAGGI on the 5.1 over, his first ball, when Swami stood at 32-3. His second came in the same over (5.5) on Thirthank Shetty, after giving out a wide. His second over saw another 2 wickets, with a stumping of Sigl Anand Bhudiya on the 7.1 over. It became a brace; in each over, he took the ball and this time got LBW on Dipak Nepali and Rakesh Shetty.

The Hurricanes, however, needed 12.3 overs, with a wicket down, to score 74 runs and won by 9 wickets.

Devnik United sits at the top of Qualifier B with 4 points, while Hurricanes and Salt n Pepper follow with 2 points each.

Salt n Pepper’s triumph came in week 1, beating MMG by 19 runs in a great match, after 149-8 and 130-9, with Kofi Bagabena (4.0-0-23-3) being decorated with the player of the match accolade.

The GCA Division One League will see 4 clubs from both Qualifier A and B make it to the elite league after a single round robin. In all, there are 8 clubs in each qualifying group.

Qualifier B also has clubs like Alpha CC, who will lock horns with MMG next week before the tie between Salt n Pepper and Champions United.
